Financial
There are many financial benefits to owning spas and hot tubs:
A Hot Tub Increases the Value of Your Home
- Most real estate agents acknowledge that homes advertised with a spas will generate more inquires, and in theory, sell quicker than a similar homes without hot tubs.
- Some home owners even opt to list portable hot tubs as options to their homes, and if potential buyers are not willing to pay the extra cost of the spa, the spa is then transported to their new home.
Note: If you are contemplating moving and taking your spa with you, it is important to keep this in mind while shopping for a spa. Ask if your dealer/manufacturer has delivery options to move the spa to another location after you purchase the spa. Though many spas are portable, they can be cumbersome to move yourself.
No Building Permits Necessary
- Many hot tubs today are manufactured to not require any permanent connection to your home’s plumbing. The only attachment to the home is an electrical connection and as a result they can be legally categorized as portable home appliances. Therefore, building permits are not necessary in most instances.
- The only time a building permit would be necessary is if you made the spa a permanent fixture to your home. For example, building permits are needed when installing a spa into a deck, or any other instance in which the spa is built into, and becomes a part of, the home’s property.
No Increase in Property Taxes
- Due to the fact that many hot tubs are considered to be portable appliances, in most cases, property taxes will not be increased.
- If you decide to permanently fix a spa into a setting, such as submerging a spa into a deck, your property taxes may increase.
Tax Benefits
Many doctors prescribe warm water therapy for a variety of ailments, injuries, and pain. As a result, there are several types of tax incentives available when purchasing a hot tub as a result of a doctor’s recommendation.
- The state of Florida voids the state sales tax on spas prescribed by physicians.
- Some insurance companies offer some level of compensation for spas purchased for injuries and/or ailments that resulted from workers compensation claims.
- Tax benefits differ from state to state. If you think that you may qualify for such benefits for any reason, we recommend contacting your state, doctor, insurance provider, accountant and/or legal counsel before purchasing a spa.
